Believe it or not, but I almost broke my leg trying to shoot it. I was in my home office working on a quiet Sunday afternoon when I noticed the coming sunset was starting to produce spectacular colors in the winter sky above our house in upstate New York. Knowing that the amount of time the sky would radiate these brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows would be brief, I reached for the nearest photographic device I could find. Unfortunately, my DSLR was packed away so I had to settle for my iPhone. I quickly bundled up with my thick down jacket, put on a pair of Gore-Tex hiking boots and a wool hat, and ran out the front door of our house. (My wife must’ve thought I was crazy.) While walking down our front steps, I saw the shot I wanted. The sun was setting behind our neighbor’s Victorian house, which has a lovely steeple roof that I knew I wanted to capture in silhouette with the vibrant sky above it. As I went to cross our street to get a closer shot, my left foot stepped into some freshly fallen snow on the edge of the road and immediately sank down, way down. Because the snow was piled high, I had forgotten that there’s a deep drainage ditch along the side of the road. While my left leg struggled to find the bottom of the ditch, I fell forward onto the road, landing on my side as my iPhone went skittering across the frozen asphalt.
